The Drive to Lubumbashi

On our way into the city, we passed (but could not see) President Kabila's residence. We waited at a few checkpoints. We saw lots of fires in the distance. The view from the taxi often looked like this.
Here is part of Lubumbashi from afar.And here is the massive coal operation right in the middle of the city. There are houses on virtually all sides. This used to be a government operation, but it has been privatized. I am told that it has fallen on hard times. It used to employ nearly 50,000 workers; it now employs a tenth of that. I believe those are trash fires in the foreground.
