My Friends

Arthur, a high school English teacher, studies criminology at one of the local universities. He helps translate, especially when the conversations involve legal issues. He's a gentle soul.

Fabrice does everything. He's my host's main deputy; he arranges the daily "program," and he helps solve any problems (police roadblocks, legal officials who aren't thrilled about talking with me, etc.).


Mama Sila (everyone here is called Mama or Papa) helps around the house, particular with cooking.

Papa Gabriel handles yardwork and other odds and ends around the house. He insisted on the hat for his glamor shot.

Papa Hubert (pronounced EE-bear) seems to run the guesthouse and handles much of the cooking.
