"Cour D'Alene Is Pretty Cool, Isn't It?"

It sure is!

I overheard one teenager ask that question to another teenager, and it seems that everyone is in agreement.

Cour D'Alene is the biggest city in Kootenai County, Idaho, pretty far up the panhandle.  Its 50,000 residents and lots of tourists get to work and play near the magnificent and quite large Lake Cour D'Alene.  I was told they also have access to another 50 lakes within about 20 miles, and they're less than an hour's drive from Spokane, Washington.

CDA, as it's known up here, isn't particularly fancy, but they do have a world-class golf course with an island green on a nice resort right in the middle of town.  The downtown is walkable and comfortable, with beautiful parks and a gorgeous walk along the lake.  It's an unpretentious, highly livable little city with lots of different kinds of people doing their thing.

I am on bit of a burger tour of the Mountain West, so I stopped in an unassuming bar for my meal, and here's what it looked like.

The picture won't blow you away, but if you look closely, you'll notice that everyone's having a very nice time.  The front window has been retracted, people are enjoying the fresh air along CDA's walkable main drag, and that's a couple of teenagers in the truck that's packed full of water gear and a happy German Shepard.  This scene captures the laid-back, outdoorsy joy that is CDA.  Everyone was carrying some kind of water toy, or walking shirtless with a solid dose of sun on their shoulders.

I stumbled upon the main park near downtown, and an evening concert was kicking off.  The whole town eventually made its way down there, it seemed, and everyone enjoyed a relaxing scene.  Here were the early attendees, with families and hippies and goth kids all doing their thing.  That's a delightful beer garden in the background, which was overflowing with smiling people within an hour.  And the music was good!  And people danced!

Here are two young ladies rocking some pink hair and watching the evening go by.

They had probably recently bounced in one of the 5 giant bounce houses set up for the concert.  Or maybe they finished playing on the biggest jungle gym I have ever seen, which is the next park over.

Here's to Cour D'Alene, a laid-back lake town that is indeed pretty cool.
